Urbanisierung in China
Hintergrund
Suqian liegt in der ostchinesischen Provinz Jiangsu und ist ein typisches Beispiel für die rasche Stadtentwicklung und Urbanisierung in China. Die Stadt geht auf antike Wurzeln zurück und diente als Handelsknotenpunkt am Großen Kanal, der Nord- und Südchina verbindet. Über die Jahrhunderte entwickelte sich Suqian zu einem regionalen Handels- und Wirtschaftszentrum.
Während der letzten Jahrzehnte hat Suqian einen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung erlebt, der auch in den Satellitenaufnahmen zu erkennen ist. Das Bruttosozialprodukt nahm zwischen 2000 und 2020 von 1 Mrd. Euro auf über 30 Mrd. Euro zu. Dieses Wachstum wurde von Investitionen in die Industrie, Landwirtschaft und Technologien getrieben, heute überschreiten die jährlichen Exporte 20 Mrd. Euro. Die strategische Lage der Stadt, gut entwickelte Infrastruktur und eine wirtschaftsfreundliche Politik haben mehr als 10.000 nationale und internationale Unternehmen angelockt.
Suqian fühlt sich einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung und „grünen“ Initiativen verpflichtet. Dazu gehört die Aufforstung von 800 Quadratkilometern Wald und die Anwendung erneuerbarer Energiequellen, die derzeit etwa 30% des Energiebedarfs decken. Damit konnte in den letzten Jahren die Luftverschmutzung reduziert und eine Zunahme von Grünflächen erreicht werden.

- Looking at the satellite image maps, estimate the area of the city in 1987 and in 2023, respectively.
- By which factor has the area increased?
- How does this relate with the population increase during this time span? What can this tell about changes in the economic structure (think about industrial halls, which cover large areas without increasing the population)?
- Green areas in the satellite images are covered with vegetation. What types of vegetated areas do you expect in this environment (e.g. pastures, crop fields, …)?

- Can you identify additional, recent changes in the area?
