project execution: 2009

The project LUCAS (Land Use/Cover Area frame Survey) contributes to the monitoring of land use changes in Europe. It is funded by Eurostat, the Statistical Agency of the European Commission.
Within LUCAS, eoVision was contracted to collect the Austrian part of the field data in 2009 as part of a consortium led by EFTAS Fernerkundungs Technologietransfer GmbH, who was responsible for the project in a large part of Europe.
The aim of LUCAS is to compile an up-to-date and homogeneous statistical data basis covering land use and its change in Europe. This information is an important prerequisite for policy planning in the environmental, agricultural and region planning sectors. The focus of the 2009 campaign was the assessment of land use and other environmentally relevant data from about 235,000 points from a 2 kilometer raster over 23 Member States. This work was done during the period from May to August 2009. Within this time frame the project team of eoVision accessed nearly 5,000 sampling points all over Austria, collected the required information and forwarded it to Eurostat.
