For the future of mankind, water is a central element in many respects. At the start of the third millennium mankind faces challenges of so far unknown dimensions, which affect the very basis of our existence. In this context water plays a key role. During the past decades Earth observation has become an indispensable tool for monitoring the state of our planed. The European Space Agency (ESA) stands at the forefront with respect to space borne survey technologies and has funded the production of the book “World of Water” produced by eoVision in cooperation with Globe View. This non-fiction book is richly illustrated with satellite image maps and presents water-related results provided by numerous Earth observation satellites.

In a well-founded and understandable form “World of Water” presents the many roles of water on Earth, the application of satellite data to water-related issues and a global overview of these issues. In a roundtrip from mountain glaciers via rivers, lakes, and oceans to the polar ice caps, this is followed by presentation of a selection of important water bodies and their specific issues. Next, the importance of water for mankind is described – the megacities’ supply with water, the sources of water, its use in agriculture, industry, energy production, mining, fishery, navigation, but also use conflicts and natural hazards such as droughts and tsunamis. A detailed geographic index and a glossary complete the book.

In an aesthetically appealing way, “World of Water” provides a profound overview of many aspects of water in our time. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive view of the huge potential of Earth observation to support a sustainable use of this vital ressource.
